Mike German visits Merthyr traffic blackspot

Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Leader and South Wales East AM, Michael German visited Llwyn Celyn Close, Ynysfach. Local residents have raised with Mr German the unresolved issue of double yellow lines on the wrong side of the road.

Michael German saw the road in Merthyr and met with concerned local resident Donald Jones.

Donald Jones, who has lived on the Estate over 30 years said, "I want to get this road cleared before a fatal accident. The Council and the Highways Department are ignoring the local residents."

There are around 345 properties including a large old people's complex and 8 purpose built bungalows for disabled people on the estate.

Mr Jones continued "The Council in Merthyr can not accept that they are wrong, no wonder they are described as a failing council. There are not enough dropped kerbs for prams and wheelchairs and we have had 3 accidents since the Merthyr Express last covered the issue in May 2002. I am calling on Merthyr Highways Department to do something about this before we have another accident."

Mr German was keen to see at first hand the problems, he said, "Issues surrounding traffic and pedestrian access can be a terrible problem to local people. I want to see this issue for myself."
