Calls increase to "Drop It To 40!"3.14.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 6th Jun 2005 Campaigners calling for speed restrictions along the A40 trunk road through Monmouth will step up their fight to convince the Welsh Assembly Government to drop speeds on this notorious stretch of busy road. During the winter of 2003/2004 Cllr. Eileen Goodrich conducted a residents' survey asking the question on reducing traffic speeds on the A40. The results were: YES to 40mph speed limit: 61 per cent YES to 50 mph speed limit: 24 per cent NO to any change: 25 per cent. "There was a groundswell of opinion in 2003 and 2004 in favour of this campaign. We have to make sure now that the voice of Monmouth people is heard again in 2005 and keep on making noise until the Welsh Assembly Government agree to limit speeds on the A40. We collected hundreds of signatures then, we'll do so again." said Eileen Goodrich. Michael German, Welsh Liberal Democrat assembly member for the region added, "I am backing this campaign one hundred per cent. Local people have given a clear indication that they back this campaign. I will certainly take the issue to the minister responsible." On Friday June 10th, Monmouth County Councillor Eileen Goodrich and Michael German AM will join the "Drop it to 40!" campaign at the traffic lights by the Wye bridge crossroads close to Monmouth Boys School at 2.30pm.
