Rally Against Welsh Assembly Council Tax Re-banding

4.04.00pm GMT Mon 24th Jan 2005

Local Liberal Democrats will join Local Government Spokesperson, Ed Davey MP, leading the rally against re-banding of Council Tax levels at 11am on Thursday 27th January outside the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff Bay.

Ed Davey MP, together with Mike German AM, and Prospective Parliamentary Candidates Nigel Flanganan (Newport West), Ed Townsend (Newport East) and Phil Hobson (Monmouth) will be calling on the Assembly to scrap Council Tax re-banding.

Michael German said, "Revaluation clearly shows that the whole Council Tax system is unfair and hits low income families the hardest. The Liberal Democrats will be protesting against re-banding and calling for the introduction of Local Income Tax based on ability to pay."

He added: "Cardiff has been dealt a major blow with re-banding. Council Tax is an unfair tax that results in the poorest 10% of people paying over 4 times more of their income in council tax than the richest 10%."
