Ebbw Vale Learning Campus a Step Closer

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 7th May 2002

South Wales East AM Michael German has reacted with enthusiasm to the news that the plans to establish a £7m "learning campus" on the site of the doomed Corus Steelworks at Ebbw Vale have taken a step forward.

Local Welsh Liberal Democrat AM Michael German has promised that he will do everything he can to facilitate the task of the consultants due to be appointed to design the new facility.

Michael German, whose constituency covers Ebbw Vale and the whole of Blaenau Gwent said, "Studies show that raising the skills level of local people is one of the key ways of tackling unemployment. If this scheme goes ahead it will be of great potential benefit for Blaenau Gwent."

Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats on Blaenau Gwent Council Brian Thomas said, "This scheme merits serious consideration, but I believe that significant funds will be required to redevelop this site. Investment in Blaenau Gwent is always welcome, and if it helps to develop the skill of the people in Blaenau Gwent so much the better."
