Taser Stun guns need careful monitoring4.35.41pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 19th Aug 2005 News that Heddlu Gwent Police are to be issued with electronic stun guns to incapacitate potentially violent criminals, has been greeted with caution by a senior Assembly Member. Responding to the news that local police will have access to the new Taser stun guns, local Welsh Liberal Democrat area AM Michael German said: "I understand the increasing concern of Gwent police that they often find themselves in the front line without adequate protection or options to control a violent situation. "Trials carried out of the new Taser guns currently appear to suggest that the stun guns are non-lethal and do not cause any permanent side effects. However, this will need future careful control and constant monitoring." "The Taser stun guns have been trialled for some time now by several police forces in the UK - including North Wales Police, where they have been used on two occasions of heightened danger of violence to the public or police officers." Heddlu Gwent Police has stated that only fully trained officers will be armed with the weapons, and deployment will only be on the authority of a high raking officer. The stun guns contain a micro-computer which records details on its use, ensuring that officers using the equipment can be monitored.
Mr. German added "We have to ensure that adequate means are available to protect our Police Officers and the public. Every reasonable alternative to actual firearms is welcomed, especially in light of recent events. However, their use will need to be scrutinised to ensure they are used appropriately."
