Michael Meets with Women on the Move

12.00.00am GMT Fri 17th Dec 2004

Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader, Michael German AM, visited a scheme today that helps unemployed mothers to return work. The scheme, which operates in Barry, is called Women on the Move and is financed by European Objective 3 funding.

Micheal German, Chairman of the committee that oversees Objective 3 spending, said, "For women wanting to return to work, the obstacles often seem overwhelming. However, by giving them the opportunity to participate in courses and become part of a local support network, Women on the Move allows unemployed mothers to develop the skills they need to build a better future for themselves and their families. The Welsh Liberal Democrats are committed to helping people to return to work; this scheme is doing just that."

The project aims to increase the confidence and self-esteem of unemployed mothers, through taster courses and tailored action plans. The importance of the Women on the Move project is evident when one considers that the unemployment rate for women in Wales, with a youngest child under 5, is now 41%.
