Welsh Lib Dems secure speed limit breakthrough in Monmouth5.29.18pm GMT Tue 15th Nov 2005 Mike German, the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats in the Welsh Assembly, has secured a breakthrough in the fight for reduced speed limits along a dangerous stretch of road in Monmouth. Mike said: "This section of the A40 bypass needs speed restrictions which provide a long-term solution to the problem". The Transport Minister Andrew Davies finally conceded to pressure and replied to a Welsh Lib Dem question, stating that a speed reduction along the A40 was "likely". Since 2003, the Welsh Lib Dems have campaigned to 'Drop it to 40' in an effort to prevent more people being killed or injured on the road. The Transport Minister has avoided the issue since 2003 and continues to claim that "it is not necessary" for him to visit the site. This marks a remarkable U-turn from the Assembly Government. Just two weeks ago First Minister Rhodri Morgan told Mike German that dropping the speed limit would make no difference to safety. Notes: Michael German asked Andrew Davies: Does the Minister intend to visit the scene of the major accidents on the A40 in Monmouthshire (Wyebridge Street Junction), to see for himself the difficulties caused by the 70mph speed limit on this stretch of road.
