Comment on proposed Argoed Primary School closure

12.00.00am GMT Mon 23rd Jan 2006

Commenting on the proposed closure of Argoed Primary School, Mike German AM said; "The council haven't considered all the options for keeping this treasured local school open. And if it were to close, the school to which children transfer would become over-crowded.

The council hasn't looked at the Assembly's small schools fund to see if that could be used.. This pot of money was created by the Welsh Liberal Democrats in government, but neglected by Labour. We have insisted it be reinstated in next year's Assembly budget which means the council has another possibility. They must look seriously at how they could use money to find innovative ways of supporting the school.

"This is a real community and the school is at the heart of that community. Every effort should be made to keep it open."
