Reid to blame for paedophile sentencing row - Michael German comment10.23.42am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 13th Jun 2006
Commenting on the row over the sentencing of Newport paedophile Craig Sweeney, Welsh Liberal Democrat local AM Michael German said: "Home Secretary John Reid should not be so quick to criticise the judicial system for the lenient sentencing - it was his government that took discretion away from judges. "Judges are restricted by guidelines laid down by the government. So John Reid needs to take a long hard look at his own Department before he criticises the judiciary - political meddling caused this mess. "Communities like those around Sweeney's home in Newport need to feel protected by the law. The Labour government's meddling and disdain for the judiciary undermines that sense of trust. So much for safer communities under Labour."
