Michael German says: "Drop it to 40"

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 31st Aug 2006

Following the news that a temporary speed limit of 40 mph is to be put in place on a dangerous stretch of the A40, local Welsh Liberal Democrat AM Michael German said:

"I am delighted to hear that temporary speed limits have been put in place between the tunnels near Monmouth and the county border. There have been too many accidents because of the 70mph limit over the years and I have been campaigning with local residents to address this."

Since 2003, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have campaigned to 'Drop it to 40' in an effort to prevent more people being killed or injured on the road.

Mike continued "If the Assembly Government can limit the speed on the A40 for eighteen months while they carry out resurfacing work, they can limit the speed permanently.

"Local residents want this. The Transport Minister Andrew Davies has told me that a speed reduction is 'likely'. I want to see the 40mph limit made permanent."
