Michael German supports Community Radio Project

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 5th Sep 2006

Local Welsh Liberal Democrat Michael German visited BRFM on its launch day this Monday and lent his support to the campaign for the radio station to gain a permanent licence.

Mr German said "BRFM is based in Brynmawr, and is a real example of how community radio can play a really positive role. It provides free advertising for community events and the sports coverage highlights clubs who might not otherwise gain the publicity.

"I have written a letter in support of a permanent licence as I believe the station is a real asset to Brynmawr. Most importantly, it offers hand-on involvement, giving local volunteers practical skills and involvement in what is their radio station.

"During my visit, I was impressed at the number of young people learning and gaining confidence, as well as employability. I shall be calling on the Welsh Assembly Government to ringfence funding to support emerging community radio stations. BRFM offers people an outlet for their talent and energy and everyone involved can be proud of what they have achieved so far."
