Liberal Democrats Michael German AM and Chris Huhne MP, (Lib Dem spokesperson on the Environment in Westminster) have visited a cutting-edge 'green' business based in the heart of Monmouthshire.

Mike German, who represents the South Wales East area in the Assembly, and Chris Huhne MP, were given a guided tour of WormTech - the company which handles Monmouthshire council's entire green waste disposal.

The company is based in Caerwent and is one of the first of its kinds in the UK. It composts several thousand tonnes of household green waste per year and sells the remaining product back to the community in the form of a rich organic fertiliser.

Mike German AM, said "WormTech are at the cutting-edge of green household waste disposal. They are proof that we can build sustainable green industries in Wales that benefit both the local economy and the environment."

Chris Huhne, Lib Dem environment spokesperson said, "It is wonderful to see a Welsh company leading the green revolution. WormTech have found an excellent method of dealing with household waste that would otherwise have ended up in landfill sites.

"WormTech have taken the normal composting process, which people do in their back gardens, and adapted it in scale to deal with many thousands of tonnes of waste.

"This is the perfect example of working with natural processes to solve modern problems."

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have a long-term goal of zero municipal waste; achieved through means such as minimisation, recycling and composting.
