Eco award-winners visit eco-award winning Assembly

5.11.47pm GMT Tue 30th Jan 2007

Local AM Michael German welcomed the Pontnewynydd School Eco-Council to the Assembly this week, to show the pupils the green features that saw the Senedd win environmental awards.

Mr German, Assembly Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said: "I visited Pontnewynydd School after they won the Eco-Schools International Green flag for their hard work making their school energy-efficient and increasing recycling.

"I wanted the school's Eco-Council to see how natural light, heat exchange systems and rainwater to clean the windows are used to save energy in the Assembly building. The children are a fantastic example to schools across Wales of how everyone can do their bit to save the environment, and I wanted them to see another great example of how to be eco-friendly.

"I am proud that in Wales we are developing an eco-culture which goes from Welsh schoolchildren up to the National Assembly, and I am happy that the Eco-Council have come down to see it in action."

Mr. Phillips, eco co-ordinator, "It's great for the children and the school as a whole that Pontnewynydd is getting recognition for all the hard work everyone has put in to promote environmental issues."
