Michael German says: "Drop it to 40"

12.00.00am GMT Thu 1st Mar 2007

Following the news that a dangerous stretch of the A40 is to have a speed limit of 50mph, local Welsh Liberal Democrat AM Michael German said:

"I'm glad the speed limit is being permanently reduced, but frankly it's not enough. Since 2003, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have campaigned with local residents to 'Drop it to 40' in an effort to prevent more people being killed or injured on the road.

"If the Assembly Government can limit the speed on the A40 for eighteen months while they carry out resurfacing work, they can limit the speed permanently.

"I will seek to amend this order from 50mph to 40 in the National Assembly.

"Local residents want this. I want to see the 40mph limit made permanent, and I will work it happen. Too many people have been killed and injured on this stretch of road already."
