Local AM Mike German today accepted thousands of signatures from Blaenavon campaigners fighting to keep the local swimming pool and leisure centre open. The campaigners from BLAST (Blaenavon Leisure and Swimming Troubleshooters) have collected over 2,600 signatures in just over 48 hours since organising the petition.

Mr German, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Leader said: "The petition is the voice of the community who want to save their swimming pool and leisure centre.

"Torfaen Council are to take a decision on Wednesday, and I think it's very important that they listen to the residents of Blaenavon before they decide on changes.

"I sit on the Assembly Petitions Committee and I intend to make sure the Assembly take notice of this. The protesters are concerned about how Heads of the Valleys funding is being used, and I want reassurances that regeneration funding is not going to be used to take away leisure facilities.

Blaenavon campaigner Claire Higgins said: "We are delighted to have such committed support from Mike German. He is 100% behind Blaenavon and this campaign, and we are hopeful that with his help, we might be able to achieve a stay of execution for our facilities."
