Local AM Mike German travelled on the first passenger trains to and from Ebbw Vale this morning Assembly on the first train on the Ebbw Valley line - and seems to have gone back in time too!

His ticket for travelling on the long delayed railway was stamped January 24 - two whole weeks before the line opened.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Mr German said: "By travelling from Cardiff to Rogerstone, and then back from Rogerstone to Cardiff this morning, I'm proud to be able to say I travelled on the first trains up and down the new line. I had a good laugh that the ticket was stamped for a day two weeks before the line eventually opened.

"The trains were not the new rolling stock I would have liked to have seen operating the service, but they were clean and tidy and gave a good impression on the first day. I was very impressed with the brand new buses that are operating the link from Rogerstone in to the centre of Newport.

"Now the line is open from Ebbw Vale Parkway to Cardiff we must step up the campaign to get a direct service in to Newport. Wales' newest city is the main employment and leisure hub for South East Wales region, and it's a great shame that the line isn't running directly in to Newport station. I will be keeping up the pressure on the Assembly, Arriva Trains and Network Rail to ensure the line to Newport is not forgotten in the excitement of the grand opening.
